Though Kirsten Wells is newish to her management position at Adept, she knew the ranks she’d be joining. “It’s our sixth year winning—but we were a little nervous [this year] as so many new places opened,” she says over the phone. In the background, tattoo guns buzz audibly, with all the senior staff too busy inking clients to take the call–showing how the tattoo and piercing shop is still in touch with its roots. “We make an effort to talk with our customers, to stay in touch with them on social media, and we’re recommended by word of mouth—which is huge,” Wells adds, explaining why Adept has won the crown once again.
