O n New Year's Eve, T. Thomason opens for Platinum Blonde at Casino Nova Scotia, capping off a year that included an album release and winning an episode of the American Idol-meets-America's Next Top Model TV show The Launch. Here, he describes the perfect New Year's party and what he hopes the new decade will sound like.
The Coast: Do you have a favourite song to ring the new year in with?
T. Thomason: "It's whatever song I've been listening to on repeat that year...Last year on New Year's Eve, I walked around the west end of Halifax and just sang Carly Rae Jepsen's record Emotion at the top of my lungs. I feel like I usually do end up on New Year's Eve by myself, going through an entire album and just singing."
Do you have any particular New Year's Eve moments that stand out for you?
"I think one of my favourite memories is just, there were four people all in my friend's kitchen and we were making fridge magnet poetry until four in the morning...I think that's one of my favourite memories, just very low key but laughing, laughing, laughing into the new year."
What defined 2019 for you?
"The Launch was the defining part of 2019 for me: Being on that show, and winning that episode, and putting out the single, and just everybody that I met as a result of that show and the people I've seen find out about my career and my story and invest in it and decide that it means something to them and get on board and become really incredible supporters."
In an ideal world, what would you like to be the sound of 2020?
"I think we're getting there, but hearing more queer voices and hearing queer artists become more prevalent and part of the mainstream conversation in terms of music and entertainment in general. I think that's already happening. There's great artists making way for each other. There's people like Dorian Electra, who's amazing, they're a great non-binary artist from LA, and Troye Sivan and many more."
