New Fries are hilarious and beautiful

Go all over the place with Toronto’s New Fries

“We're convinced people can hear our desperate want to do this, and can't deny us as a result,” says New Fries’ Anni Spadafora. “We think they hear the fun, and our desire to just bang around and not take this too seriously, and maybe that's a hilarious and beautiful thing to watch adults do.”

Toronto’s New Fries—Spadafora, Tim Fagan, Jenny Gitman and “sometimes Ryan Carley”—makes electrifying and insistent music. The newly released, *Fresh Face Forward* is filled with driving, energetic post-something. Who cares what it’s post, it’s great. Spadafora’s unique lyrical style steers the ship, words are repeated, syllables drawn out and tripped over. “The songs definitely prompt the lyrics, they always come last or almost last. I'm super curious about the feeling or sound of words repeated, insisted. That probably stems from my Gertrude Stein obsession,” says Spadafora. “Thematically the lyrics are all over the place: talking about working class stories, heartbreak, desperately wanting to touch clay all day every day in the desert like Whoopi Goldberg in *Moonlight and Valentino*, textiles.”

You’ve got two chances to see New Fries this week, so don’t fuck it up.
