Gift From God gets power from improvisation

Born from an intuitive sense of harmony between its members, Gift from God is a collaboration rooted in improvisation. At their OBEY show, Lindsay Dobbin (drums), Kira Daube (vocals) and Elizabeth Johnson (keyboards) will feed off of both a shared musical feeling and the added energy from a live audience. "I know I'm listening to what's going on, but sometimes I feel like I'm just listening to something else and responding to that more," says Daube. "It's like something between all of us." The trio's live appearances are rare, and as Johnson notes, performing changes the dynamic of its sound. "Having other people witnessing the process is definitely a big influence on me," she says.

"That's what I love about this project...I feel like there's a lot of mystery and play and fun in what we do," says Dobbin. "It's like an active, ongoing process that is constantly moving. We're on a journey."
